PLEASE IT’S TIME TO END THE STUPID DAYLIGHT SAVINGS NIGHTMARE ONCE AND FOR ALL
Daylight Savings is stupid. That sounds like a casual and lay statement. Yet it is true none the less. Based on a time when agriculture drove a large part of the economy, daylight savings was implemented to increase working hours in the light, and to conserve energy use. And while that makes sense, that’s not the way most of the world works anymore. In fact, it’s increasingly a cause of a host of negative impacts beyond the painful adjustment. So Daylight Savings is now stupid to continue, and it’s time to end it once and for all of us.
END DAYLIGHT SAVINGS, MOVE THE CLOCKS ONE HOUR FORWARD AND LEAVE THEM THERE
So what’s the answer? Well, some thoughtful people out there suggest we simply move the clocks forward and leave them there. We’d save a number of lives just from making more light for commuters, as the majority of fatal accidents are in the evening in high volume traffic. Crime would also go down, especially committed by juveniles, who prefer the dark. This would remove one more hour of darkness before bars close and most people are safe at home. And let’s get to energy use, which would go down with the clocks permanently moved forward. Based on climate change alone, this should be enough reason to end Daylight Savings immediately.
AND, DAYLIGHT SAVINGS IS A NIGHTMARE FOR FAMILY LIFE, WITH YOUNG CHILDREN
So now I’ll get to the personal experiences many of us share. Such as the adjustment to the time change wrecks sleep, perception and overall energy for days on end. And with the clocks falling back just a few days ago, let me tell you I’m still in the middle of it. And for parents, it’s even worse! Kids internal clocks take even longer to adjust, especially in the morning. Let’s just say that I’ve had two 4:30 wake ups with the mini-me in the last 4 days alone. And that sets the tone for everyone all the way to bedtime.
So please, please states and even the Fed. It’s time to end the madness, get better sleep, use less energy and stimulate the economy with more awake time in the sun.
