ITALIANS MAKE RECORD DRUG BUST, $1.2 BILLION IN AMPHETAMINES FROM SYRIA
So it looks like we may need to revisit Miami Vice as a show in Salerno, Italy. Because Sonny and Crockett never made a score like this. No one has, till now. But even though drug busts happen every day across the world, the biggest ever doesn’t. And this drug bust is definitely the biggest ever. We’re talking about police seizing $1.2 billion dollars in amphetamines. That’s a staggering haul of illegal narcotics. Just look at that picture! So I’m not sure what Miami Vice would be like in Italian. But we may be in store to find out after this.
POLICE SEIZED NEARLY 31,000 POUNDS OF AMPHETAMINES IN PILL FORM, 15.4 TONS
So how much amphetamines is $1.2 billion dollars’ worth? Almost 31,000 pounds, or 15.4 tons. The police, or Guardia di Finanza, say that they found the huge cache of pills in 3 shipping containers at the local port. So where did they come from? Syria. And yes, a dangerous group was the source. Their name is ISIS. That’s right, these are drugs to fund terrorists in the Middle East. Sell them to the very people they want to target is a simple, brutal strategy. Italian authorities have been investigating the Camorra, an Italian organized crime syndicate. So they knew the drugs were coming.
LIKE ALL DRUGS, AMPHETAMINES ARE IN SHORT SUPPLY IN EUROPE DUE TO PANDEMIC
The Coronavirus pandemic has essentially shut down the drug trade in Europe. No one is making drugs locally and the pandemic has made distribution a huge challenge. But demand hasn’t gone away. And Covid hasn’t stopped or really slowed down drug production in Syria. Connect those dots and you have the biggest drug bust in history! And a $1.2 billion narcotics bust is… impressive. But it’s also a little scary. 31,000 pounds of drugs in a single shipment? You don’t have to imagine too hard to picture some really pissed off criminals losing their huge shipment of amphetamines.
Meanwhile, stay safe. And don’t look for happy pills.
