WHEN FISH ATTACK! SAILFISH JUMPED OUT OF WATER, IMPALED WOMAN OFF FLORIDA COAST
Fishing has its hazards, even if you’re just fishing in a small pond for lake trout. You can fall in. Maybe you get stuck by your own hook. Sunburn is always a concern, even if there are clouds. And, of course, you can get hurt by the very fish you reel in. That usually means cuts from sharp fins. Or maybe the fish gets a bite in while you try to get the hook out. But what about when the fish impales you? And you haven’t even gotten it in the boat yet? Because that’s what happened to one woman from Arnold, Maryland, who was fishing with friends just of Florida. Getting impaled by a sailfish isn’t your usual sort of fishing accident!
73-YEAR-OLD VICTIM WAS STANDING INSIDE BOAT WHEN SAILFISH FLEW TO IMPALE HER
The poor woman was 73-year-old Katherine Perkins. The sailfish impaled her earlier last week, as she and her friends were fishing about two miles off the coast of Stuart, Florida. Stuart has been known as the “sailfish capital of the world” going all the way back to 1938. If you know anything about sailfishing, you know that these fish can get very large and are very strong. Once you hook one, it can take quite a while to bring it in. It’s literally a battle of wills, strength and a race to the other’s exhaustion. Katherine’s friend had gotten the sailfish close to the boat when the unthinkable happened.
SAILFISH IMPALED HER IN GROIN AREA, AS HER FRIENDS QUICKLY APPLIED PRESSURE TO WOUND
Her friend was getting ready to pull the sailfish onboard when he paused to take a celebratory photo. But the sailfish had some energy in reserve. It charged the boat, jumped out of the water and stabbed Katherine in the groin! She was standing next to the center console in the boat when the animal’s literal spear tore thru her body. Katherine’s two septuagenarian friends, Louis Toth and Dominic Bellezza, quickly applied pressure to her wound and headed to shore at speed, calling ahead to alert authorities. Fortunately for Katherine, she got medical assistance in time and is recovering from her sailfish impalement in a hospital in Fort Pierce.
This time, the catch of the day was an impaled woman on vacation!
