Expensive! Rubyglow Pineapple Now Selling for $395 a Piece?

WHAT’S AN EXPENSIVE PIZZA TOPPING?  HOW ABOUT THE $395 A PIECE RUBYGLOW PINEAPPLE?

Pineapple is really, really good for you.  It’s chock full of a host of vitamins, and you can even take the core and use it as a powerful anti-cancer ingredient in smoothies.  Sure, the core doesn’t taste as good.  But all you have to do is add more banana or agave to make the smoothie, ah, smooth.  But pineapple, like pretty much everything else, has only gotten more expensive of late.  It used to be that getting pineapple on your pizza wasn’t one of the more expensive toppings.  Not compared to pepperoni, sausage, or even grilled chicken.  But now I’ve heard of the most expensive pineapple ever, the Rubyglow pineapple which you’ll have to shell out $395 a piece for.

A LUXURY MIXOLOGIST’S WET DREAM, THE RUBYGLOW A LUXURY FRUIT FOR A TASTY COCKTAIL

Fortunately for me, I’m not a Hawaiian style pizza fan in the least.  Though I know a few mixologists who likely wouldn’t mind adding this crazy expensive fruit to one of their cocktail list markups.  So far, in the West you can only find this totally exclusive bank account drainer at Melissa’s Produce.  Currently (I checked), it’s a safe temptation for anyone as the Rubyglow pineapple is currently sold out.  But if you are tempted, that’s not good news, now or later.  Now, it means you can’t get it.  Later, it likely means that the price point for this likely tasty fruit is only going to go up.

THE RUBYGLOW PINEAPPLE COMES FROM COSTA RICA, WITH ONLY A FEW THOUSAND EACH YEAR

So what, in theory, makes this such an expensive fruit buy?  The fruit comes from Costa Rica, which is a fairly exotic location and a pretty unique growing environment.  But the Rubyglow evidently took 15 years to develop, with “meticulous cultivation” and a lot of grunt work in crossbreeding.  It’s a combination of a classic pineapple and the “rare” Morada (yet another pineapple I’ve never heard of).  And as for taste, it has a “smooth flavor with minimal acidity.”  So if you are tempted and have the disposable income to merit purchasing “luxury fruit” like the Rubyglow pineapple, you might want to get you order in now, as there are only a few thousand of these sexy, exclusive beauties available each season.

Now I think it’s time for pepperoni and spinach pizza.  Hold the “luxury fruit.”
