New Obesity Weight-Loss Drug Wegovy Supply Way Short of Demand

THE NEW EFFECTIVE WEIGHT-LOSS DRUG, WEGOVY, WILL STAY OUT OF REACH AS DEMAND TRUMPS SUPPLY

So I’m not the sort to be too familiar with weight-loss drugs.  I’m old and skinny.  And when I wasn’t old, I was still skinny.  The amount of time I’ve been overweight can be measured by hours after a heavy meal.  But for many, including many in my family, obesity is a scary and challenging obstacle to good health.  And weight-loss drugs do help many lose those dangerous pounds, which is a good thing.  Well, side-effects notwithstanding for some.  But the new drug to shed the pounds on the market is none other than Wegovy.  It’s got a cool name and a great reputation. But now that it’s out on the market, supply is falling far short of hungry demand.

EXPERTS SAY WEGOVY IS A GAME CHANGER, AS MAKER NOVO NORDISK UNDERESTIMATED POPULARITY

But there’s a reason Wegovy is so popular.  Some experts call it a “game-changing” new drug.  I don’t know what TV channels you watch, but you may have seen some commercials for it this past year.  Drug maker Novo Nordisk released Wegovy early this past summer.  But a whole lot of interested folks who want to lose some weight will have to, um, wait until sometime next year, in 2022.  It’s an unusual circumstance, though it should be noted that we’re still in a pandemic, and demand for certain drugs is indeed a curious thing.

WEGOVY SEEMS TO BE A HUGE IMPROVEMENT ON OLDER WEIGHT-LOSS DRUGS, BUT IT WILL COST YOU

So why is Wegovy in such high demand?  Well, in its clinical trials, people with obesity lost 15% of their mass within a year.  And, yes, that was compared to a placebo.  But older weight-loss drugs that are still on the market just aren’t as effective as Wegovy appears to be.  For most with obesity who need to make a change, they end up going for variously dangerous surgeries to get the pounds off.  Well, if they have healthcare and can afford it, that is.  So far, the only known drawback to Wegovy is that if you stop taking it after just a few months, you will likely regain all the weight you lost in the next year. And, of course, you likely can’t even get it for another 3-6 months until supply greets demand.

Oh, and make sure your insurance covers it.  Otherwise, be prepared to shell out $1,600 every month.
