Great White Sharks in New York & New Jersey Waters, More to Come

GREAT WHITE SHARKS ARE NEAR NEW YORK AND THE JERSEY SHORE, AND THEIR FRIENDS ARE COMING TOO

So great white sharks have been around the Northeast before.  Shoot, they actually are here kind of all the time.  But we don’t tend to see them too much near beaches around New York City or the nearby Jersey Shore.  But scientists have identified at least 4 great white sharks that are on their way, if they’re not there already.  So this is where I admit to going to the beach on the Jersey Shore.  Despite Covid, it’s still there.  You can go, but if you want to avoid stupid people without masks, it can be a challenge.  And now?  Now, you may not feel much safer in the water!  Even if it’s all in your head.

ONE OF THESE MONSTER GREAT WHITE SHARKS IS 16 FEET LONG, 3,400 POUNDS

So the great white shark in the picture is Cabot.  He’s a nice little 9 feet long.  And yes, he’s in the Tri-State area.  Well, the waters anyway.  Next up is Mary Lee.  She’s 16 feet long and weighs over 3,400 pounds.  Mary Lee is on her way, too.  Then, there’s Caroline, who has only recently been hanging out in the area.  She only weighs 1,300 pounds.  A tracking station pinged her recently near Barnegat Light, New Jersey.  But scientists tracking these monsters say there’s a new guy almost in town.  He’s heading up from the deep ocean off the Southern end of New Jersey.  His name is Vinny and he’s 13 feet long, weighing 1,100 pounds.  That’s a lot of great white sharks.

SCIENTISTS SAY THESE GREAT WHITE SHARKS ARE A GOOD SIGN, AND LESS DANGEROUS THAN DRIVING

So if you want to hang out with your chums, don’t chum the water, as it were.  I saw the movie Jaws as a kid and it will never go away.  News like this doesn’t help much, either.  But the scientists say that there’s nothing to worry about.  They say that your drive to the beach is more dangerous than swimming with sharks.  In fact, these sharks being around means that the local shores are doing well.  But if the seal population keeps growing up in Cape Cod, year round, we can expect more of these great white sharks gracing our New York and New Jersey waters.

So don’t worry too much.  Now, I’ve got to go drink something strong to get some Jaws music out of my head.  Before I go to the Jersey Shore tomorrow…..
