Washington State Troopers Spend New Year’s Eve Battling Tumblegeddon

WASHINGTON STATE TROOPERS RESPOND TO TUMBLEGEDDON ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

So you probably have heard of the word tumbleweeds before.  But most have likely never seen one in person.  Mostly, a tumbleweed is what you saw on tv. It’s that random ball of dried out something that rolls by in the eerie wind in a Western.  But I’ve actually seen my share.  Mostly in the state of Texas.  It felt very random.  But Washington State?  I’ve never been there.  But they just had so many tumbleweeds on New Year’s Eve that it’s now known as Tumblegeddon.  State troopers spent the whole evening battling them!

PEOPLE CALLED 911 TO REPORT ON BLOCKED ROAD, TROOPERS FOUND TUMBLEGEDDON

And no, that’s not a silly statement  The scale of this kinda shocks the hell out of me.  I mean, how could this be a real thing?  So here are the deets.  People started calling 911 on New Year’s Eve around 6:30 pm local time telling troopers about tumbleweeds blocking the road.  The issue was roughly 20 miles west of Richland, Washington.  When troopers arrived at the scene, they saw that the calls were accurate and tumbleweeds had blocked he road.  Tumbleweeds had even trapped vehicles!  So that’s what I mean about scale.

But here’s some more scale.  4 cars and a semi were covered in tumbleweeds.  It took ten hours for troopers to clear all the tumbleweeds away.  On New Year’s Eve.  Winds that night were 50 miles per hour!  And how much road needed clearing?  About 300 yards.  So as long as 3 football fields!  But local troopers didn’t seem to be too surprised.  Tumbleweeds are normal on that stretch of road, which is “like a desert plateau.”  But no one has ever seen anything like Tumblegeddon before.  But everyone is happy this didn’t cause a massive pileup, as most drive 60 miler per hour there.
