STATE OF MAINE HAS NO SENSE OF HUMOR, CONFISCATES VEGAN FAMILY’S LICENSE PLATE, LUVTOFU
I’m a big fan of vanity license plates, though I don’t have one now. Not in this economy! I figure paying state taxes is enough every year. But they can be fun and funny, especially on long road trips where anything even remotely interesting is welcome. Some of them are pretty nebulous, and take a little time to figure out. But some, of course, simply remain a mystery. But I’m pretty sure I could be able to figure out the plate LUVTOFU. And I’d laugh a while for the privilege. Bu the prurient state of Maine doesn’t seem to get it, and just confiscated this very plate from a vegan family for being “obscene.”

LUVTOFU WAS TOO OBSCENE FOR PRURIENT MAINE, EVEN THOUGH TOFU IS GOOD FOR YOU
And, well, it seems like Nancy Reagan’s legacy lives on with this state activity. Maine is engaged in a crackdown on vanity license plates to keep obscenities and violence off its streets. And yes, it is a bit of a headscratcher how there is any connection between license plates and street violence. But to be fair, the idea of eating a block of bean curd when I was younger would have elicited a violent reaction. But today I’m welcome to eating tofu, the spicier the better. Yet it seems I won’t be doing that in Maine any time soon! And if I did, I’d have to get a bumper sticker that says LUVTOFU before going to Maine.

So sure, I get how the bureaucrats misunderstood this license plate. Love to f^ck you is an honest adolescent misunderstanding any… adolescent would make. So way to go, Maine! But the vegan Starostecki family isn’t alone in losing their vanity license plates. Maine has recalled 274 of their roughly 120,000 currently issued vanity plates for being “obscene.” I kind of want a list to see what other prurient judgements Maine has made aside from LUVTOFU. There is an appeals process, but so far none of the 274 license holders have bothered.
Way to be even more boring, Maine!
