Do Not Use Skincare Products with These Active Ingredients

DON’T USE ANY SKINCARE PRODUCTS WITH THESE ACTIVE INGREDIENTS

Skincare products are now incredibly diverse.  There are almost too many to choose from.  But if we know what we need, we can find the right product for every need.  But we have to remember that some active ingredients don’t work well with other substances.  In fact, they can be really bad for us!  But knowing when to use what can be a little confusing.  Active substances recommended by dermatologists include alpha hydroxy acids (such as glycolic acid), beta hydroxy acids (eg salicylic acid), retinol, and vitamin C.  All of these have their very helpful uses.  But some of them are not good for you if taken together.  So here’s a short list of what is, and isn’t good to be used together.

DON’T COMBINE VITAMIN C AND RETINOL

Vitamin C work as an antioxidant that will fight skin damage caused by sun and other pollutants.  It also works to brighten black skin dots and build helps to build collagen that reduces wrinkles lines.  Retinol and retinoids are a vitamin A that can brighten brown spots and also improve wrinkles.  But retinol can also make skin more sensitive to sunlight.  But here’s the catch about the two together.  They each work best in very different acidity environments (pH) and so should not be combined.  Vitamin C works best in low pH, lower than 3.5; retinol works best in pH 5.5-6.  So what to do?  Use vitamin C in the morning and then retinol in the evening before bed.  Then you maximize the benefits of both, but separately.

GOOD TO COMBINE TOGETHER: VITAMIN C AND SUNSCREEN

Several experts have suggested that vitamin c and sunscreen work very well together.  As mentioned above, vitamin C is a great antioxidant that can help your skin recover from sun damage.  But it’s also a great natural anti-inflammatory.  So of course it works well with sunscreen!  Sunscreen helps protect your skin from damaging rays.  But vitamin C does the same but also helps you recover from any burn you may get.

DON’T COMBINE: ALPHA OR BETA HYDROXY ACIDS AND RETINOL

In skincare products, aplha hydroxy acids (AHA) include glycolic, lactic, and citric acid. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) refers to salicylic acid.  These acids can be found on all skin products to overcome blackheads or eksfoliasi. Meanwhile, retinol is used to treat acne and improve wrinkle lines.  But when these two active substances are shared, they can cause dryness, redness, and irritation. So it’s best to use these separately and at different times.

DON’T COMBINE: BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND RETINOL

So when retinol is used together with benzoyl peroxide, the positive effects of both can be very limited. Both of these active substances are better used on their own.  Again, use retinol at night and beta acid or alpha hydroxy in the morning.
So to recap, retinol should not be used with these potentially irritating skin products, especially those that are acid based.  But also note not to use retinol if you’ve recently done a peeling or any kind of laser treatment.  Just remember to keep track of all these ingredients before you put them on your skin!
