“WORLD’S WORST SOCCER TEAM” STARTS WINNING, SO FANS START WHINING
This is truly a different idea of sports fandom. Soccer, arguably still the most popular sort worldwide, has very, very dedicated fans to their respective teams. Competition is fierce, be it international or in local leagues, such as historically the deep talent pool in Brazil. Fans in Brazil are not slouches when it comes to cheering their teams on, with deep rivalries in-country and active fan participation. So, it comes as no small surprise that when what had been heralded as the world’s worst soccer team in Brazil, Ibis, started winning, the fans weren’t happy, they were livid. They love their losers.

But what had become a tradition of losing since the 1980’s recently changed when the team won several matches in a row. Ibis is self-styled as the “worst team in the world” and plays in the lowest division of what is called the Pernambuco state championship. But fans are not happy with the recent success. In fact, they feel like the team is in danger of losing their history and identity as the worst soccer team in the world. Last week Ibis enjoyed a 1-0 victory against Ferroviário do Cabo.

Ibis fans were so upset they stormed a local bar where the Ibis players were enjoying a post-match barbecue and victory and demanded that they please stop winning.
“This is destroying our history,” said one of the protest leaders, Nilsinho Filho.

More fans also went on social media to complain, or to call for resignations. “This is a worrying situation in the long term. To stop being an icon and to be just another winning team. It’s the coach’s fault,” read a one of the thematic tweets.
Between 1980 and 1984, Ibis went three years and 11 months without winning a single game, and thus entered the Guinness Book of Records as “the worst club in the world”.
The club’s Maradona-permed and former midfielder Mauro Shampoo, now boasts that he scored just one goal in a decade, and he has also criticized the recent victories. “If we keep winning, we are going to lose our brand,” he said.

The Ibis club’s president, Ozir Junior, has insisted that the club’s ambition now is to get to the first division of the state championship. He thinks the recent string of sudden victories is due to several new players who joined the team after recently becoming unemployed elsewhere. “We are not the worst team in the world – that was a thing of the 1980s. We’re not even the worst team in Pernambuco,” he said. “The first division is our dream, but it’s going to be a lot of work.”
Nilsinho Filho claimed that even should the club be promoted, Íbis Sport has already cemented its place in history. “Even if we go on to win the Brazilian championship one day, no one will ever be able to take our title as the worst team in the world,” he said.
It’s worth noting that Ibis just lost a match, and the fans celebrated what they hope to continue to be the club’s tradition: being the worst in the world.
