Upstate New York Has Amazing, Great Museums

GREAT AND AMAZING MUSEUMS IN UPSTATE NEW YORK

Don’t want to go too far to see great art? No problem! There are hidden gems all over upstate New York.  Of course it seems like the best art is in NYC proper. But you would be wrong! In fact, some amazing art exists just outside this huge, crowded city, and you don’t have to wade through millions of tourists to get a look. Here are five art museums you will want to try to check out the next time you get a chance.

1. The Hessel Museum of Art in Annandale-On-Hudson, NY – this small museum is currently celebrating to gallerists, Pat Hearn and Colin de Land, as it questions the fundamental use of galleries altogether. These two men foresaw what was to come, with the global art community on the rise and online shopping becoming a huge competitor to regular brick and mortar stores. They figured out long ago how to stay in the game, and they have been proven right many times over.

2. The School in Kinderhook, NY – this museum/gallery has taken over a former public school to house its exhibitions, which currently include a show by Radcliffe Bailey called “Windward Coast – West Coast Slave Trade.” The art is haunting and worth the drive.

3. The Art Omi in Ghent, NY – this is less a gallery than a park. The open section hosts large works while the inside portion is currently housing a beautiful exhibition of Thomas Nozjowski’s more recent paintings. Both parts are unique to the landscape and worth the trip.

4. The Olana State Historic Site in Hudson, NY – this site currently has on display an exhibition of the religious garb of Constantinople, Beirut, Bethlehem, Baalbek, Damascus, Jerusalem and Petra in the 1800s. Beautiful clothes with a complicated past.

5. The ‘T’ Space Gallery in Rhinebeck, NY – this museum currently holds an incredible feat of artistic architecture. The artist, Ricci Albenda, has executed a structure that looks like it was seen through a fish-eye lens. It is arresting and simple all at once.
