Philip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant
It is bittersweet to see the brilliant actor Philip Seymour Hoffman onscreen again in “A Most Wanted Man.” He stars as Günther Bachmann, a disheveled, lonely man working as a secret agent in an anti-terrorist unit located in Hamburg, Germany.
It’s eerie and disturbing watching Hoffman as Bachmann destroying himself with hard drinking, chain smoking and too much food. He is the embodiment of sadness, and it’s hard to know where the line is between the actor and the character. Hoffman gives another Oscar-worthy performance alongside a brilliant cast that includes Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright and Rachel McAdams. At the helm is director Anton Corbijn, who I met with.
Bottom line: “A Most Wanted Man” delivers. Tension? Check. Intrigue? Check. And it lands with a powerful kick at the end. It opens Friday, July 25.
