Saudi Teen Arrested for Macarena Dance in Street

BOY ARRESTED FOR DANCING, OR POSSIBLY LOOKING GAY IN SAUDI ARABIA?

So much for our allies. In yet another example of an utter lack of socially progressive culture, a teenager was arrested in Saudi Arabia for doing the Macarena Dance in the street. A video taken of the 14-year-old boy has gone viral on Twitter, showing him dancing the Macarena in the middle of a fairly busy street in Jedda, Saudi Arabia.

Accused of “improper public behavior,” the teenager is being questioned by authorities in Jedda. There is no information yet what the child’s nationality is nor if he faces formal charges from the public prosecutor. Recently Saudi Arabia has been cracking down on seemingly innocuous public displays, such as a singer arrested for “dabbing” during a concert in the south-west of the country.

In the 45-second clip the teen can be seen disrupting traffic while dancing to the popular 1990s hit song. The clip was believed to have been first posted in July 2016. Because of the lack of codified penal law in Saudi Arabia, officials and judges have broad discretion in the arrest and punishment of children in the conservative country. The incident was filmed on a busy street in Jeddah, in the west of the country.

POLITICAL STUNT AND STATEMENT, OR JUST SILLY KID IN WRONG COUNRTY?

The clip has divided social media, with some users defending the boy and even labelling him a “hero”. Others have suggested his behavior was “immoral”. It is odd that the boy’s nationality is a question, and what relevance that would have. If he isn’t Saudi, what would that mean? If he is Saudi, does he face greater jeopardy in terms of civil penalties?

It also begs the question as to whether the boy was completely cognizant of his actions by dancing a provocative dance in the middle of the street where people would be forced to stop and create a sensation. So far there has been no mention if this was possibly a political stunt or some other form of statement. But first the boy awaits word if he will face charges, or some other form of punishment.
