Library Evacuated, Rotting Fruit Smelled Like Explosive Gas

ROTTING FRUIT SMELLS LIKE EXPLOSIVE GAS, LIBRARY EVACUATED

False alarms happen all the time.  Usually they are fire alarms.  You know, someone pulls the alarm as a gag and everyone has to evacuate.  Or maybe an alarm is over sensitive to something trivial, like humidity.  But this false alarm was something completely different.  It happened in RMIT, a University in Melbourne, Australia.  So evidently people in the library were smelling a strange gas odor and called the Metropolitan Fire Brigade.  To be fair, gas leaks are scary things.  But also, the library is home to some possibly dangerous chemicals, so a gas leak was indeed possible.  So why the false alarm?  The gas smell was from rotting fruit.

But that wasn’t apparent immediately.  The fire brigade conducted a “comprehensive search” of the entire library complex.  But eventually they tracked down the noxious gas smell to the source, a Southeast Asian fruit, a durian.  The fruit was rotting in a library cupboard.  The smell wafted out but was then circulated thru the building in the air conditioning system.  That’s what made it so mysterious and seemingly a threat.  The firemen literally had to hunt down the rotting fruit, all the while using protocols that an explosion was more than possible.  Sounds fun, right?  At least this time it turned out to be harmless.

WAS IT A PRANK?  OR A WAY TO SKIP FINALS?  NO ONE KNOWS AND NO ONE IS SAYING

After a few hours the library reopened.  The fruit was remanded to Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority to oversee the rotting fruit.  But was this a simple accident?  Or was there some mildly nefarious plot?  Was someone trying to get out of their term paper?  It is, after all, a University.  These things do happen!  Or was it some pointless juvenile prank?  In any event, no one has been blamed.  But no one has taken responsibility either.  But the durian fruit is for real as a stinker. Scientists have found at least 50 different chemical compounds in the fruit that gives it such a scary stinking power.
