Woman Who Never Returned VHS Rental 21 Years Ago Gets Felony Charges

WOMAN RENTS VHS VIDEO 21 YEARS AGO, FINDS OUT SHE FACES FELONY CHARGES FOR NO RETURN

So, you know, it’s funny.  I just looked at an “article” about how if you could identify any of a bunch of pictures, you were old as fuggedaboudid.  And I knew almost all of them.  Sigh.  But one of those pictures was of the inside of a Blockbuster Video store.  If you know it, you don’t need an explanation.  But if you don’t, Blockbuster Video was where we old fogies used to go to rent movies to watch.  On VHS.  As in, a video cassette, that you would play on a VHS player.  We’re talking old school here.  You rent a video, watch it, and return it.  Very simple.  But for one woman, she never returned it 21 years ago.  And now she’s facing felony charges?  Wait, what?

NOW LIVING IN TEXAS, WOMAN DISCOVERED FELONY CHARGES OVER VHS TAPE AT DMV

Way back in 1999, Caron McBride lived in Norman, Oklahoma.  That year, she rented Sabrina the Teenage Witch.  It was quite the stunner for her to learn that officials charged her in absentia with felony embezzlement over the VHS tape.  21 years ago!  She now lives in Texas and went to change her name on her driver’s license, because she got married and took her husband’s last name.  A number popped up for her to call at the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office.  So she did, and found out about the felony charges on file for her over the VHS tape.

AT FIRST, SHE THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE, A VHS TAPE FROM 21 YEARS AGO? REALLY?

At first, McBride thought it simply had to be a joke.  But no, no joke!  And even better?  She doesn’t even remember renting the VHS video from Movie Place (alas, not Blockbuster) which hasn’t even been in business since 2008.  Because, well, we’re talking about a business making money from VHS tapes.  Now, I have to tell young’uns what they even are!  There must be some way to clear all of this up, though I don’t know how hairy the red tape will be.  For all anyone knows, this was a clerical error and that tape is in a landfill somewhere with all the other old carbon recordings.
