South Carolina Town Board Police Chief Fired for Being Gay...

A grievance board in a South Carolina town has determined the city’s first openly-gay police chief was not fired by a controversial mayor because of her sexual orientation.

Recently, TheBlot Magazine reported on Mayor Earl Bullard’s decision to fire Crystal Moore, a 20-year veteran of the Latta, S.C., police force. The dismissal followed seven reprimands handed down by Bullard following an investigation conducted by Moore into the use of a city vehicle by the town’s parks and recreations director, who was appointed by Bullard when he took office.

Moore found that Bullard failed to conduct a proper background check into the parks and rec director upon his hiring. That did not sit well with the mayor, who handed down seven reprimands against Moore in an apparent retaliatory move.

Moore was dismissed in April after the mayor determined that she had approached “news media to help bring about disorder and disruption to the town of Latta,” among other offenses.

The decision to fire Moore stirred controversy after an audiotape was leaked to TV station WBTW in which Bullard was caught making several anti-gay remarks.

“I would much rather have — and I will say this to anybody’s face — somebody who drank and drank too much taking care of my child than I had somebody whose lifestyle is questionable around children,” Bullard said on a phone call recorded by council member Jarrett Taylor. “I’m not going to let two women stand up there and hold hands and let my child be aware of it, and I’m not going to see them do it with two men neither.”

The tape and the firing angered many of Moore’s supporters in Latta, among them the city council which launched an investigation into the mayor’s handling of Moore’s termination.

“We have codes, but this mayor refuses to obey anything in that book he don’t want to,” Latta city councilwoman Lutherine Williams told reporter Matt Petrillo. “Before he was sworn in [as mayor], he said … Crystal would not have a job.”

Many believed Moore’s sexual orientation played into Bullard’s decision to fire the police chief. But a grievance committee found on Thursday that there was no proof Bullard’s actions had anything to do with Moore being gay.

“The committee went over all reprimands and phone records from Crystal Moore’s phone,” the grievance committee said in an undated letter made public this week. “We discussed if we thought she was fired for being openly gay. We all agreed there was no proof of Crystal Moore being fired for being openly gay.”

Moore said she is confused about why the grievance committee focused on her sexual orientation instead of the reprimands handed down by the mayor.

“It’s kinda confusing why they were discussing why if they thought I was fired for being gay,” Moore told WBTW. “That wasn’t the issue. The issue was the bogus reprimands.”

Moore could still wind up getting her job back. Later this month, the city council will vote on whether to create a so-called “strong city council” that would remove certain abilities of the mayor. If the council approves the measure, some say they will later vote affirmatively to give Moore her job back.
