THE DARK CRYSTAL: ODYSSEY, SOON TO BE A BALLET AT LONDON’S ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
So who knows how old you are. More than likely, you weren’t even born when Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal came out in movie theaters. I mean, it was back in 1982! But if you have never seen the movie, it was kind of crazy. It’s the most audacious puppet movie, like ever. It’s a fantasy, and there are a LOT of characters that had to be really hard for puppeteers to control. I mean, think about it. There wasn’t any computer animation back then for special effects! The movie still has a major cult following. But I had no idea there was any chance for this! Because London’s Royal Opera House is going to have The Dark Crystal as a ballet next season!

SURE TO BE A SPECTACLE, HOW WILL THE DARK CRYSTAL TRANSLATE AS A BALLET?
So I’m not a show tunes guy. Which means I really have no clue how they are going to present this. Like, at all. And will it be just as spooky as the movie was? I mean, I was still a kid when it came out. And the movie had more than a few moments that totally scared me. Because the movie involved me as a kid in a really big way. But ballet? Dancing puppets? Or dancers with heretofore unseen costumes? I’m guessing the latter. But it is sure to be a spectacle. A colorful, musical spectacle.

THE DARK CRYSTAL: ODYSSEY BALLET WILL INCLUDE HUGE ARTIST COLLABORATIONS
So the Dark Crystal ballet is to be directed and choreographed by Wayne McGregor. I had to look him up. But he’s the real deal. But The Dark Crystal: Odyssey ballet will also include the works of artists Brian and Wendy Froud, the composer Joel Cadbury, the digital wizard designers konstrastmoment, lighting designer Lucy Carter, and “dramaturg” Uzma Hameed. Wait, there’s more! Let’s not forget costume designer Philip Delamore and the face and body artist Alex Box. Lastly, there will of course be props and PUPPETS from Jim Henson’s very own Creature Shop.
Let’s all just hope that they will live stream this, just once!
