Evangelicals Now Think Jesus Was a Woke Liberal Tool

SOME EVANGELICALS NOW THINK JESUS WAS REALLY A “WOKE” LIBERAL TOOL

In the course of my life, which runs more than a few decades now, I’ve often wondered about the inherent hypocrisy of many self-described Christians.  But growing up in the U.S., this has been a particular conundrum to sort out, given that for generations now, most Americans have thought of America as a Christian company.  Many still do, today.  And many within that group (though not all of them by any means) are evangelicals.  And now we all seem to be confronted by some of their inherent hypocrisy to a degree I hadn’t really expected to see so directly.  Now, some think of Jesus Christ as a “Woke” and liberal tool.

NEW BOOK AUTHOR AND EVANGELICAL NOTES MAJOR SHIFT ON EVANGELICAL VIEW  ON JESUS

Where is this coming from?  Well, besides people making jokes about this being the case for years, I bring you Russell Moore, a former top official for the Southern Baptist Convention.  He was an early evangelical critic of Donald Trump going back to the Orange Don’s first campaign days.  But in an interview on NPR recently, Moore talked about his new book, Losing Our Religion: An Altar Call for Evangelical America.  And he talked about his book, including how pastors quoting Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount were challenged over the liberal message.  In other words, Jesus was woke.

JESUS MESSAGES FROM SERMON ON THE MOUNT NOW CONSIDERED TO BE, “WEAK,” AND LIBERAL

Moore described how this isn’t a new dynamic at all. But in the past when people challenged pastors and the pastor replied, “I’m literally quoting Jesus Christ,” they would then apologize.  But those mazing days of self-ascribed Christian id are now a thing of the past.  Now instead of an apology, woke liberal Jesus critics say, “Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore. That’s weak.”  So while I can’t say I’m surprised I am nonetheless appalled.  Individual or group Christian hypocrisy has taken a new, giant step in the wrong direction.  Conservative and social political identity, supposedly founded on some idea of Christian morals, has become literal quicksand.

So what could be next?  Maybe a formalized Christian sect that identifies Jesus as a white supremacist closet fascist?  Or are we already there?
