First Idiot Ever Caught Smuggling Greenhouse Gases Into America

FIRST IDIOT EVER CAUGHT SMUGGLING GREENHOUSE GASES INTO AMERICA, FACES SERIOUS TIME

Well, this is a first that reminded me of a law I had entirely forgotten about.  Hydroflurocarbons, or HFCs, are illegal to bring into the United States without permission from the EPA.  HFCs are, essentially, greenhouse gases that make climate change much worse.  The more HFCs, the more climate change.  But there’s a market for all things illegal, and we now have the first idiot on record caught smuggling greenhouse gases in the form of HFCs into America.  Until this news, I frankly forgot that HFCs have been proscribed for some time.  But I remember pretty clearly now why that is.

IDIOT BROUGHT THEM HIDDEN IN HIS TRUCK, DROVE ACROSS THE BORDER FROM MEXICO

And as for 58-year-old Michael Hart, he won’t be forgetting anytime soon, either.  Because he’s the idiot on record being caught smuggling greenhouse gases into the States for the first time.  It’s like he’s trying to steal the exclusive franchise of making money by destroying the planet from Big Oil and Coal.  Hart bought the HFCs in Mexico and drove them across the border into the US in the back of his truck, hidden under a tarp and tools.  And that there is smuggling of illicit goods.  He then went on to resell them at quite a nice markup on sites like OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace.

THIS GREENHOUSE GASES SMUGGLER COULD GET 20 YEARS BEHIND BARS AND $250,000 FINE

So who would want to buy HFCs on the sly and why?  A host of people, as these particular greenhouse gases are used in aerosols, fire extinguishing systems and building insulation.  It pains me to say it, but I remember using aerosol cans back in the day that were nothing but HFCs.  So Hart is facing a number of charges that he pleads not guilty to.  They include conspiracy, unlawful importation, and selling merchandise imported unlawfully.  But despite his plea(s), if found guilty he could get 5-20 years behind bars and a quarter million US dollars in fines.

He didn’t get the memo, I suppose.  Independent operators aren’t allowed to make money destroying the planet.  They don’t even get federal subsidies for decades, either.
