FLORIDA NOW EARNS A CDC TRAVEL ADVISORY DUE TO MODERN-DAY LEPROSY ENDEMIC

I’ve been to Florida once in my life so far.  So I can’t say that I really know all that much about it, except to say that it has been a source of some of the most ludicrous, disgusting, funny and outrageous news literally for at least 3 decades.  I’ve always assumed I would go back and see a bit more than just Miami and some of the more touristy aspects of the Everglades.  But with the asinine piece of work that is Governor Ron DeSantis and his zealot-filled local GOP, I wasn’t making any plans to go anytime soon.  But now that the CDC has issues a travel advisory for the leprosy endemic that is actually happening, I may wait a decade to see if it’s safe.

OTHER U.S. STATES HAVE LEPROSY CASES, BUT FLORIDA NOW ACCOUNTS FOR 20% NATIONALLY

And yes, we are literally talking about a literal endemic of an all but eliminated disease, leprosy, that you would otherwise only find when reading the bible.  But hey, it is Florida we’re talking about here.  Yet I must offer the fact that Florida is only one of many US states that have reported cases of deformed body parts falling off of people.  And it’s then also worth noting that Florida now accounts 20% of all leprosy cases nationwide.  Let’s see the easy math… Ok, Florida now has a rate of this disease that is ten times more than any other state.

LEPROSY IS NOW SPREADING LOCALLY IN FLORIDA; BEWARE CENTRAL FLORIDA IN PARTICULAR

Last year alone, there were 159 cases reported in Florida, and the spread is occurring locally.  In other words, if you go there, you are at risk of catching leprosy and then taking it home to your family, friends and communities.  You should also know that historically, Florida and the rest of the United States had reported cases of leprosy only from people who had immigrated from other places in the world where it was endemic.  But since 2015, roughly 34% of all new cases were from local infections.  So maybe listen to the CDC, and look to have your beach vacation somewhere else.

But most especially, be sure to avoid Central Florida.  Not to avoid the Bible thumpers.  To avoid the maybe future leper colony.
