Extremely Venomous Snake Cameos During Brisbane Tennis Match

EXTREMELY VENOMOUS EASTERN BROWN SNAKE APPEARS ON COURT DURING BRISBANE TENNIS MATCH

Why did it have to be snakes?  Occasionally, sports matches are interrupted by any manner of natural invasion.  I’ve seen dogs, birds, bats, rabbits, even wasps or bees chasing players around their various courts or fields.  But I’ve never seen an extremely venomous snake come out and stop play.  And this happened on a tennis court!  That small area could have proven to be very unfortunate for an unlucky player or one of the ballkids.  But play did indeed stop at a match at the Brisbane International tennis tournament between former US Open Champion Dominic Thiem and James McCabe.

EXTREMELY VENOMOUS MEANS THE SECOND DEADLIEST VENOM IN THE WORLD

Thiem, 30, was down in the match when a 20-inch eastern brown snake suddenly appeared on the court.  And when I say they are extremely venomous, that means they kill more people in Australia every year than any other.  As for their venom, it’s the second most toxic of any land snake, in the world.  And even more concerning, they can move fast, are aggressive, and are known for having very bad tempers.  So you can understand why play stopped immediately when one of these scary creatures suddenly appeared on the court at a tennis match.

If bitten, a human will likely collapse within a few minutes.  The extremely venomous bite causes “progressive paralysis” and stops blood from clotting.  (Successful) treatment involves a lot of doses of antivenom to reverse the deadly effects.  So it’s a good thing that a snake-wrangler was on-hand to capture this beast safely.  And as for the tennis match?  After the extremely venomous snake was removed, former US Open Champion Thiem managed to take control, and mounted a successful comeback, winning 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 and qualifying for the main draw of the tournament.
