Lone Star Kindergarten Teacher Resigned After Melatonin Gummies Exposed

LONE STAR KINDERGARTEN TEACHER IN HOT WATER AFTER MELATONIN GUMMIES SCANDAL EMERGES

Truly, this is the kind of story I would normally expect to come out of Florida.  But the Lone Star State is rather large.  So I suppose it’s inevitable it will produce such a terrible story from time to time.  As a parent, I’m outraged right out of the gate with this ill news.  And that being said, I can’t imagine how the parents of the young children involved are reacting, besides much worse.  It seems a kindergarten teacher had been handing out melatonin gummies to her students.  And even worse?  We’re talking about her young, special education students.  The teacher resigned almost as soon as nefarious behavior was exposed.

YOUNG SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN PUT AT RISK, PARENTS CONCERNED WITH KIDS’ LETHARGY

So to be specific, this happened at the Pine Forest Elementary School in the Humble Independent School District just outside of Houston, Texas.  The district started an investigation after several parents noticed a difference in their children’s behavior when they returned home from school.  The parents of one non-verbal 5-year-old said their child was stumbling getting off the bus from school.  They now know the cause: melatonin gummies.  And even more disturbing, that child’s parents recall a conversation with the teacher where they were asked what calmed their child down.  And even worse?  The teacher asked them if their child liked “gummies.”

TOO MANY MELATONIN GUMMIES COULD HAVE RESULTED IN OVERDOSE, EVEN DEATH

As a person with a special needs child in the family, I must say my outrage is turning into horror.  A quick investigation about the dangers of melatonin for children turns up some stomach-churning facts.  From 2012-2021, Poison Control received over 260,000 reports of children ingesting melatonin.  And of that number, 4,000 children were hospitalized, 5 had to be on ventilators, and 2 died.  Children overdosing on melatonin is all too real.  And a kindergarten teacher handing out melatonin gummies with no oversight or permission could have ended in tragedy.

Charges are entirely possible, and soon.
