Humans Could Start Catching Scary Zombie Deer Disease

MOVE OVER MAD COW DISEASE, ZOMBIE DEER DISEASE COULD INFECT HUMANS ANY MINUTE NOW

If you love zombie movies, you probably already know that the undead malaise came from an ape in an evil research lab.  So it’s a little weird to know that there’s a Zombie Deer Disease out and about in the wild.  Non-lay people like me call it Chronic Wasting Disease.  But zombie as a term fits, as deer who catch this are left drooling, lethargic and eventually dead.  And yes, lethargic zombies are different movies than the ape in the lab.  But in all seriousness, this is a real disease, with real zombie deer.  And what makes it even scarier is that epidemiologists say that humans could start catching it.

CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE IS ALSO CAUSED BY PRIONS, WHICH TURN YOUR BRAIN INTO MUSH

Chronic Wasting Disease is similar to Mad Cow Disease, as it’s also caused by prions.  Those prions are misshapen and replicating (as in, they spread) proteins that turn infected brains to veritable mush.  And, also like the Mad Cow Disease outbreak in England, an infected zombie deer could soon give this scary malaise to a human being.  And once that happens, things could conceivably turn into a zombie stag party, fast.  So far, we know that zombie deer disease is present in big-game animals in both the United States and Canada.  And all it takes is one deer, elk or moose to infect a cow, bird or human for things to get 28 Days Later.  But maybe tomorrow.

WOLVES COULD SAVE THE DAY, IF THEY KILL ZOMBIE DEER BEFORE 28 DAYS LATER WAS LAST MONTH

That’s what happened with Mad Cow in England.  From one day to the next it went from no problem to suddenly humans losing their minds from the (very real) threat.  So what can we do?  Besides staying away from deer or that stoner you know down the street, not much at all.  But fortunately, wolves could be our heroes when it comes to this new, brain eating threat.  If a wolf sees an animal with zombie deer disease, they somehow know it’s sick and will kill it.  Fortunately, wolves can’t catch or spread it.

Not yet, anyway.
