Ben Stein, author, pundit, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” actor and peddler of Clear Eyes eyedrops, dropped quite a bombshell on Fox News’ “America’s News HQ” on Sunday.
“I think the White House is trying to racialize all politics, and trying to tell the African-American voters the GOP is against letting them have a good life in this economy, and that’s just a complete lie,” Stein told host Shannon Bream.
OK, his comment is nothing new or much of a bombshell, but Stein continues, saying that Democratic politicians, especially Hillary Clinton, try to get the African-American vote by telling those potential voters that Republicans have policies against black people where the economy is concerned, though “there are no such policies.”
Again, normal, everyday political mudslinging, until Stein says:
“It’s all a way to racialize voting in this country … This president is the most racist president there has ever been in America. He is purposely trying to use race to divide Americans.”
Well. Well, now.
From Ferguson and police brutality to reverse racism, racial issues are a ticking time bomb in this country these days. And whether you like Obama or not, you’re allowed to have your opinion of him because this is America, but to call the nation’s first black president “the most racist president” is a bit of a stretch.
While racial tensions seem to have escalated since his election, we cannot forget that there were 12 — TWELVE — American presidents who owned slaves. And all but four owned slaves while they were president.
According to The Hauenstein Center at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.:
George Washington had between 250-350 slaves*
Thomas Jefferson had about 200 slaves*
James Madison had more than 100 slaves*
James Monroe had about 75 slaves*
Andrew Jackson had less than 200 slaves*
Martin Van Buren had one slave
William Henry Harrison had 11 slaves
John Tyler had about 70 slaves*
James Polk had about 25 slaves*
Zachary Taylor had less than 150 slaves*
Andrew Johnson probably had eight slaves
Ulysses S. Grant probably had five slaves
* indicates that they owned slaves while serving as U.S. president
