A FILM ABOUT A PALESTINIAN BOY JUST WON THE TOP AWARD IN ISRAEL
THE SEA IS ABOUT A PALESTINIAN BOY WHO’S NEVER SEEN THE OCEAN BEFORE
And, quite frankly, I think that’s a good thing. If you haven’t already heard about this movie, it’s called The Sea. It’s about a 12-year-old Palestinian boy who’s from the landlocked West Bank. So he’s never been to the shore or seen the ocean, and so sneaks into Israel to do just that. But that, of course, means he has to avoid security checkpoints and the police. The Sea was directed by an Israeli, Shai Carmeli-Pollak, and was produced by a Palestinian, Bahael Agbarian. And somehow, this little film won top the top prize at the Ophir Awards ceremony. But not everyone is pleased like I am at the news.

ISRAELI MINISTER SO ANGRY ABOUT FILM AWARD HE THREATENS TO CUT FUNDING
Israel’s Minister of Culture, Miki Zohar, is so angry about it that he’s threatened to end al funding to Ophir itself. Zohar, of course, is a member of Israel’s conservative party, and said that Ophir was spitting in the faces of Israel’s hero soldiers by giving the top award to a movie about a Palestinian boy. But I can’t help but (safely) assume that the off-screen drama will only draw even more attention toThe Sea. I must say that I’m eager to see the movie for myself and find out just why it’s so good. Besides, of course, it being a story about a little Palestinian boy. You know, a humanizing story everyone can identify with….
