17 Babies in Spain Get Werewolf Syndrome After Drug Error

DID AN ERROR CAUSE 17 BABIES IN SPAIN TO GET WEREWOLF SYNDROME?

I can’t believe this story is giving me Teen Wolf nostalgia.  I didn’t even know that was possible at this point.  But hearing the term Werewolf Syndrome was all it took.  And yes, there is such a thing as Werewolf Syndrome.  And just recently, 17 babies in Spain were showing symptoms of Werewolf Syndrome.  Yes, that is a pretty high number.  Well, any number would be pretty high.  But anyway, I can only imagine what these parents went thru.  You know, when their little babies started growing hair all over their bodies.  And no, this is not an exaggeration.

BABIES’ FOREHEADS, CHEEKS ARMS, LEGS, COVERED IN WEREWOLF LIKE HAIR

So, of course there’s a technical name for Werewolf Syndrome.  It’s hypertrichosis.  Yet the lack of excitement in that term doesn’t make the situation any less disturbing for these parents.  One mother, Angela Selles, told Spanish media, “My son’s forehead, cheeks, arms and legs, hands became covered in hair.”  Um, ok.  That’s pretty disturbing!  As you can imagine, many of the parents went to doctor after doctor looking for help.  I mean, what would you do when your 3-month-old daughter starts growing a beard?  But this situation was more than disturbing.  It was strange.  So the Spanish Agency of Medical Devices (AEMPS) started investigating.

ALL 17 WEREWOLF BABIES WERE GIVEN MISLABELED MINOXIDIL, NOT GASTRIC REFLUX DRUGS

AEMPS quickly realized all 17 babies had taken what was listed as a gastric reflux drug.  That was the only commonality for all the babies.  So they traced the drug to FarmaQuimica Sur.  That’s a pharma factory in Malaga (southern Spain, if you don’t know).  AEMPS then further discovered that a bulk shipment of this gastric reflux drug arrived properly labeled from India.  But when the factory divided and then repackaged it, they made a big error.  They labeled packages of drugs as omeprazole (or gastric reflux drugs).  But they actually contained minoxidil.  Yup, that’s right.  These 17 babies took a drug that treats hair loss!

So whew!  Thank god these kids don’t have Werewolf Syndrome!  The extra hair will fall out as soon as they stop taking minoxidil.  But, doctors will have to watch them closely to make sure they don’t have any heart complications as a result.  As you can imagine, the factory that made the screwup if pretty much toast.  In the drug world, mislabeling drugs is an unforgivable sin.
