Texas Ends Water Breaks for Construction Workers As Temps Spike

TEXAS REPUBLICANS PASS LAW ENDING WTER BREAKS FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS

So as you can see in the picture above, the temps in Texas are out of control.  It’s only June.  JUNE.  So what can the residents of the Lone Star State expect in July, and God Forbid in August?  Not just more of the same, but even hotter.  I’ve been to Texas a number of times, including in the Summer months.  And I’ve often wondered, as I drove by in an air conditioned car, what it must be like to be a construction worker in a place that gets so hot.  Brutal, I thought.  But it’s about to get worse, as the Texas Legislature just signed House Bill 2127, which ends mandatory water breaks for construction workers.

AUSTIN AND DALLAS, TEXAS ENACTED WATER BREAKS FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN 2015

No, seriously.  This happened.  And Texas Governor Abbott signed the damn bill, making it the law of the Lone Star State land.  It goes into effect on September 1st.  So fortunately, construction workers will still be able to have their water breaks for the next 2 and a half months.  The water breaks were established in 2015 by Austin and Dallas, which gave the poor folks working in the sun and heat a 10-minute break every 4 hours when they can (and soon to be could) get in the shade briefly.  If politics sounds crazy hot in Texas, that’s because they are.

BUT TEXAS REPUBLICANS END WATER BREAKS FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AS HEAT-RELATED DEATHS SPIKE

But this takes the ruined, melted cake.  Heat-related deaths in Texas are at their highest levels in decades, right now.  In the years 2011-2021, Texas was where 42 construction workers died from heat exposure.  But that number is likely higher, as many heat-related deaths are recorded as caused by something else.  Like, your helmet melted into your skull.  So why would Texas Republicans in the legislature and Republican Governor Abbott make a point of doing this?  For no other reason than to stick it to Austin and Dallas, where Democrats tend to be the majority.

Maybe Dallas and Austin need to secede from the state, and become their own District of Sanity.
