SEXY LADIES NOW HAVE MUSCLES, ACCORDING TO STUDY
Skinny bodies used to be all the rage. Remember all the skinny ladies on the runways? On magazine covers? Sometimes you’d look at a picture and say wow, she’s hot! But maybe she should eat something? That long fad still has an impact today on body image. Many women and the industries they work in have an ideal body image that almost requires starvation. This isn’t new. It’s been a long time since Marylin Monroe sang Happy Birthday, Mr. President. But researchers at the University of Missouri-Kansas City made a startling discovery. Women with muscle tone or even muscular figures are now considered to be sexier than skinny figures. That’s a huge change. Sexy ladies have never been stronger! Muscles are sexy!
NEW HOTNESS MUSCLES SAYS I MUST BREAK YOU TO OLD HOTNESS SKINNY
The study had 78 undergraduate students, all women, to rate the winners of the Miss USA beauty pageant. They looked at the winners from back in 1999 up to 2013. Study participants then rated the winning ladies by how attractive, muscular and thin they were. They found that most of the recent pageant winners were muscular and toned, not thin. That marks a new trend in what we think is sexy and beautiful. Goodbye, Heroin addict models! Well, sometime soon, anyway. Frances Bozsik, the lead researcher in the study, explained, “There is a shift in the thin ideal female figure to one that now includes the appearance of physical fitness via muscularity.”

SOCIAL MEDIA, EMERGING TRENDS A BOOST FOR HEALTHIER BODIES
Bozsik also said that the explosion of “fitspo” on social media had something to do with the trend, and that both muscularity and thinness is often traits of lady celebrities. According to Bozsik Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest have had a positive impact on eating disorders. All three platforms allow users to curate collections of images of strong, fit and healthy public idols. “These websites allow individuals to collect images of women with whom they identify or admire, essentially allowing them to cultivate their own media repertoire of highly salient thin and fit media. This process of selecting preferred images and then narrowing the media focus by placing these images on their ‘boards’ may inadvertently increase the risk of developing higher levels of body dissatisfaction, as well as subsequent disordered-eating behaviors that are linked to it.”
