ONE OFFICIAL IN ISRAEL GOES THERE: SUGGESTS NUKING GAZA AS VIABLE OPTION TO KILL HAMAS MILITANTS
It’s increasingly hard these days to understand the current context when it comes to major events like what’s happening in Israel this past month. And that current context gets even more challenging when you try to apply historic facts, and their cascade of contexts as well. But even in the last month, identifying fact from fiction -not even including propaganda at this point- has proven to be a hazardous task. But one fact that has come to light that isn’t arguable is that an official in Israel suggested nuking Gaza as a possible strategy to kill Hamas militants.

THE IDEA OF NUKING GAZA OPENS THE QUESTION: IS ISRAEL NOW OFFICIALLY A NUCLEAR POWER?
And, well, that’s more than a little problematic, at best. At worst, it alludes to a mindset among some Israelis where the nuclear option isn’t just a phrase, it’s a literal, ah, truth. But as people argue past each other about which group of people -Israelis or Palestinians- are the true victims this month or for decades, it’s hard to avoid noticing that some in Israel think it’s worth exploring killing virtually all Palestinians in Gaza to remove the legitimate threat that is Hamas. Yet here’s another more than slightly noteworthy detail about this development: Israel isn’t officially a nuclear state. So does this tacitly confirm, as many have suspected for more than 20 years, that Israel has nuclear weapons and the ability to deliver them ballistically?

Officially, no. But the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimates that Israel is currently modernizing its nuclear arsenal, which currently may include 90 warheads in storage. As for the Israeli official – far-right Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu- who made this pogromatic suggestion, Prime Minister Netanyahu quickly suspended him. Yet it is stunning to hear any mention of the nuclear option being raised by any Israeli to kill Hamas militants. And even as I write that, I can’t help but remember that Donald Trump, while president, did just the same several times.
And it is these kinds of idiots in power who can start wars, and create a conflagration that could threaten the entire world.
