MAGA HAS SUDDEN LOVE OF GUN CONTROL IN AMERICA, BUT ONLY FOR TRANS PEOPLE
I have to say that my cynicism was wholly inadequate to the depth of hypocrisy of America’s conservatives. But perhaps I simply need to feed it more of my terrified imagination. Because apparently MAGA Republicans have finally gotten on board with instituting some form of gun control. And no, the not-universal or not-at-all background checks across America don’t count as gun control. Yet now we are poised at a new juncture, where there’s suddenly a new and incredibly threatening group of people who simply can’t be allowed to own firearms: trans people.
UNTIL TARGETING TRANS PEOPLE, PRESERVING THE 2ND AMENDMENT WAS MAGA PRIORITY
Remember the good old days, when literally any kind of gun control in any shape or form was a slippery slope of precedent that defined the shape of all national and local elections? Well actually, those good old days were yesterday, or maybe a couple of weeks ago, when a trans person turned out to be the mass shooter at a Minneapolis church, killing 2 children and wounding 21 others. But as of today, America has had 309 mass shootings in 2025. And while my memory isn’t what it once was, I can’t think of any other mass shooting involving trans people. Not one. At least, not as the shooter.

But now with calls to literally ban trans people in America from owning guns is incredibly important in the MAGA thought process. Yet I literally never thought I’d see the day when any kind of gun control would come out of right field. But my imagination simply couldn’t capture how the current short-term (politically, anyway) strategy of the Republican Party de-humanizing trans people could (pardon me) Trump the indelible 2nd Amendment right of (all) individuals to keep and bear arms. It seems taking away constitutional rights from “some folks” is no longer tyranny. Be careful out there, everyone. The precedent we should be terrified of isn’t the start of gun control.
