LATEST OBVIOUS PSA TELLS GUN OWNERS TO NOT STORE THEIR GUNS IN THE OVEN ANYMORE
Every time I see a public service announcement, I try to grade it on its obviousness. Because these days let’s face it: people are idiots. Consider just how many times we’ve seen a PSA about not getting within a certain distance of Bison at Yellowstone, never mind harass one? A lot of times. Sure, there are also cases where you’ll see a PSA that’s less obvious, like don’t get anywhere near the strange looking bird in Australia, the cassowary; it can literally eviscerate you. But generally, we get obvious warning not to do something stupid that should require no warning at all. And warning gun owners that they should really stop storing their guns in the oven anymore surely qualifies.

VIRGINIA FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF AN EXPLOSION: A GUN IN THE OVEN
And yes, this is for real, as you can see from the partially melted handgun on the oven rack in the picture above. That’s a real gun, and it really is melted. We know about this after firefighters responded to the report of an explosion in Chesterfield, VA. And yes, the explosion was the gun firing, because what happens to bullets when they get too hot? They explode, right? And that’s exactly what happened after its owner had “stored” the gun in the oven and then totally forgot it was in there when they turned the oven on.

And while I can vaguely understand -not being a gun owner myself- the allure of having some home protection at reach in random places in my home just in case I need to protect my sovereign self, the oven wouldn’t be my first, 50th, or last choice. I mean, seriously, how many movies and tv shows have we seen guns duck taped to an unobtrusive spot, and easy to get to? And something like this has happened before, when in 2018 another one of these gun owners was shot by his own gun from the oven, twice. And yes, he was “severely injured” but survived.
Here’s the PSA. For some reason, they recommend a gun safe instead. You know, “safe?”
