Dutch Artist Made Tower That Turns Beijing Smog Into Diamonds

AIR PURIFYING TOWER MADE BY DUTCH ARTIST TO CLEAN THE AIR, MAKES SMOG DIAMONDS

So this sounds just too fantastic to be true.  Or, rather, it’s straight out of a sci-fi novel or TV show.  You know, letting readers and viewers know that amazing solutions are possible, just not real?  Well, I for one am only too happy to see something fantastical made real.  Like, here.  Today.  Well, not here.  This is just in Beijing so far.  But it’s an elegant solution to a problem that exists everywhere.  And that’s smog.  Air pollution.  But Beijing needs help.  And a Dutch artist living there made something that’s too good to be true.  A tower that cleans smog from the air.  Ok, that’s neat.  But how about turning that smog into diamonds?

FANTASTICAL REALITY IS HERE, AS DUTCH ARTIST HOPES TO CLEAN SMOG WORLDWIDE

So while this sounds like a fantasy, it’s already real.  And yes, that picture you see above is fruit of the automatic labor.  The Dutch artist is Daan Roosegaarde.  Besides his name having to of almost every vowel, he has amazing creative vision.  He lives in Beijing, and realized that looking out his window he couldn’t even see the city.  That he was in.  Because the smog was so thick, you see.  And very dangerous, too.  Kids as young as 8 get lung cancer living there.  And the average lifespan of residents has dropped up to 16 years.  But the Dutch artist has started to do something about the problem.

His creation is to date the world’s largest air purifier ever.  It’s the “Smog Free Tower.”  While the name isn’t catchy, the tower is.  It catches 30,000 cubic meters of air every hour.  And it cleans that dirty air down to the very nano scale.  The clean air goes back out into the city and the smog stays behind.  And it works well enough that the air near the Smog Free Tower is up to 75% cleaner than the rest of the huge city.  But at first, the Dutch artist didn’t know what to do with all the crap the tower collected.  He said, “We had buckets of this disgusting material in our studio.”  Yuck.

Hopefully, his partnering with other NGOs and governments will take this everywhere.  We can breathe a clearer sigh of relief if it does.  Well, and sport some fashion beauty that came from deathly ugliness, too.
