ZOMBIE SQUIRREL BRAINS, HUNTER KILLER?
It’s Halloween week! Yay! So it’s the perfect time to go all Zombie with…. squirrel brains? Yes, squirrel brains. Because the tinier than a nut sized gray goop is suspected of killing a hunter. The 61-year-old died in 2015, but his death has been something of a mystery, till now. A recent report found that the hunter died from something called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). And yes, that’s a mouthful, just like… oh, forget it. But if that sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve heard of Mad Cow Disease. Now we have Mad Squirrel Disease. Do not make the squirrel angry. You wouldn’t like it if it’s angry. Ok, ok, it wasn’t a green squirrel. But officials now believe that squirrel brains killed this Rochester hunter.

DID ROCHESTER HUNTER EAT MAD SQUIRREL BRAINS?
So eating brains comes with some risks, it seems. But so far we’re still not sure if the hunter ate the brains, or just squirrel meat with some contaminated brain matter. It ain’t easy skinning varmint, is it? But concerned family or friends brought the hunter to the hospital when he totally lost touch with reality. He also couldn’t walk by himself at that point. But a brain scan looked a lot like he had a form of mad cow disease (CJD). So there are only three kinds of CJD. But you can only catch one of those from bad…. Brains. It involves infectious proteins, or prions, which cause lesions in our brains. And no, there is no treatment or cure. Period. It’s the break it, you own it situation. Except it’s your brain and life.

THE PROOF WILL BE IN THE PUDDING, OR “MORE BRAINS”
So far there have only been a few hundred cases of CJD reported anywhere. But most of them were in England. In the US, we’ve only heard of four cases, ever. So for now, the hunter’s death is a “maybe” when it comes to mad squirrel disease. Doctors are waiting to see his detailed medical records. If the autopsy tested his brain, they’ll get a confirmation one way or the other.
