NEW HARVARD STUDY FINDS SCIENTIFIC CONNECTION BETWEEN BRAIN DAMAGE AND RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM
This really shouldn’t be shocking news to anyone with…. a brain. But for some reason, it feels strange relating some of the findings of a new study from Harvard University. Apparently, the study found a direct correlation between people with brain damage and religious fundamentalism. Just take that in for a moment, and let that percolate across a lot of things that have happened in recent years. And then wonder a bit more about the advent of Covid, the pandemic, long Covid and how it causes neurological damage. And no, I’m not saying this study looked at Covid in relation to religious fundamentalism. But it’s food for thought.

EVEN MORE DISTURBING: BRAIN DAMAGE ALSO CONNECTED TO CONFABULATION AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR
Well, organized thought, anyway. The study focused on two groups with brain lesions: veterans of the Vietnam War, and people from Iowa who had brain injuries that impacted reasoning, belief formation, and moral decision-making. Those three are more food for thought thinking about what this could mean about recent years and Covid, no? But the study found some crossover in terms of regions of the brain that involve fundamentalism, confabulation (creating false beliefs), and criminal behavior. Now I’m having a hard time avoiding thinking about “fake news,” politics, and increasingly polarized culture. We may need to change how we think about brain damage of any degree and groups of people.

WILL ANOTHER STUDY SHOW THE RISE OF MAGA IN RELATION TO COVID-RELATED BRAIN DAMAGE
But going back to fundamentalism, confabulation and criminal behavior, I can’t help think about the not brief enough ascendance of hate radio in America along with the (still mass-viewed) Fox news. Many political junkies and analysts have found cause to describe the MAGA movement, and Trumpism itself, as a cult. Religious fundamentalism? Check. Criminal behavior (and the celebration of) check (and check). Confabulation? Adhering to false beliefs almost like a metastasizing philosophical pyramid scheme? Triple check. Brain damage of any degree was never a good thing and remains so. But now we are just discovering the iceberg we all hit, and need to recognize the damage it’s causing.
