VALERIE THE MINI-DACHSHUND SOMEHOW SURVIVED 529 DAYS IN THE AUSTRALIAN WILDERNESS
Somehow, I missed this little, lovely nugget of good news. And that’s after I had read a series of articles over a year and a half about a mini-dachshund named Valerie, who had gone missing in Australian wilderness but was surviving. And she kept surviving, against all odds, even as she proved to be impossible to save by catching her. She had disappeared from a campsite on Kangaroo Island back in November, 2023. And her distraught owners had to go home after searching for days with locals to no avail. Yet somehow the little, seemingly helpless little dog survived 529 days in the wild before finally going home.

OWNER’S WERE SHOCKED TO SEE A PICTURE OF VALERIE ALIVE OVERE A YEAR LATER
The story really is quite unusual, mostly because Valerie somehow survived all that time in the wild. The island is remote, sparsely populated and also home to predators like snakes and eagles. And yes, eagles large enough to look at a mini-dachshund like a nice, easy meal. And while Valerie was and is microchipped and had an Apple AirTag, it’s hard to triangulate a location without plenty of people or hotspots around with Apple Bluetooth signal. Her owners had pretty much given up hope after a year, when a farmer this past February took a picture of the little dog running thru fields.

IT TOOK ANOTHER 2 MONTHS TO FINALLY CATCH AND SAVE THE WILY VALERIE BEFORE HOMECOMING
The picture eventually made its way to the Kangala Wildlife Rescue, which is a Kangaroo Island animal rescue center which is focused on wildlife, and had been in contact with Valerie’s owners and let them know the amazing news. Their mini-dachshund Valerie was alive! Then everyone thought it would take a few days to catch her. But the little dog survivor was wily, and it took an amazing two months to catch her with a remote activated trap. No one is sure how this 10 pound dog survived 529 days in the wild. But she came home with even more muscle mass than she went missing.
Truly an amazing, mystifying story.
