THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR COWORKER YOUR SALARY
Money is one of the hardest things to talk about, but it can also be the most helpful and important topic around the office. Growing up I was always told to steer clear of talking about money in mixed company. And so I did. But now, as an adult, I am finding it harder and harder to know what to say when the topic of money comes up. But now you should tell a coworker your salary, too! Here are some reasons why talking about money should no longer be so taboo:
1. It is unlawful for employers to prohibit their employees from discussing their wages, so everyone should start talking about it. This makes it much more difficult for employers to pay their employees less than they should. But if we don’t talk about it, they can do whatever they want.
2. You don’t have to tell your employers what you have been paid in the past, because this might influence how much they pay you in the future. But you should make sure that you are being paid a competitive rate for the job you are doing and for the experience level that you exhibit. Talking with you colleagues help with this process and make sure everyone in the office is getting paid fairly.
3. It’s important to know your worth, and nothing shows that more than asking for what you deserve. Think about what you also need to live comfortably and ask for 10k more than that. If you don’t think you will be able to convince your bosses that you need the raise, talk to your coworkers. I bet you will be surprised at how many of them would also love to be paid properly. But they are just scared to ask. Everyone is in the same boat, so it’s better to work together.
