AS OF YESTERDAY, THE FBI IS ASSEMBLING LISTS OF ANYTHING ANTIFA-RELATED TO INVESTIGATE
Yesterday was the deadline for any and all law enforcement agencies to hand over all of their intelligence files related to “Antifa” and Antifa-related” people and activities to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The deadline was set by AG Pam Bondi earlier this month. In other words, Trump now officially has the FBI making lists of anyone any agency might, somehow, possibly think of as “Antifa.” This is concerning, to say the least. Especially in light of the fact that in September, Trump designated Antifa as a “major terrorist organization.” But who is Antifa? And even more poignant, what is Antifa?

TRUMP HAS ALREADY DESIGNATED ANTIFA TO BE A LEFT-WING TERRORIST ORGANIZATION
When it comes to any FBI investigations, it seems all too likely that the answers to both questions will be defined by Donald Trump and other member of his administration. And considering how Antifa’s definition centers around some nebulous idea of “left-wing terrorism,” any and all FBI investigations will be entirely political in nature. Because we already know that former FBI director Chris Wray and the Congressional Research Service have already gone on the record saying that Antifa isn’t even a group; it’s a decentralized movement. In other words, it doesn’t actually exist.

And then we get to the really important point, which is that the Trump Administration doesn’t even have any statutory authority to designate any domestic group as a terrorist organization! So to recap, Trump says Antifa are left-wing, violent terrorists. Pam Bondi demands lists from all US law enforcement to be given to the FBI to identify anything and anyone Antifa-related. The FBI will now, supposedly, conduct official investigations nationally to bring these domestic terrorists to justice to protect the Republic. But Antifa doesn’t exist….
It’s not much of a leap to assume these investigations will target Trump’s political enemies and critics, is it? It’s a good time to remember McCarthyism and it’s dangers in today’s America.
