GOONIES II IS ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN, AND I’M ALREADY NOSTALGIC FOR YET ANOTHER SEQUEL
I loved the movie Goonies when it first came out. But I was still a kid then, and there was just something magical about amazing summer movie releases at the time. And no, Summer movies just haven’t had the same gravitas since. Personally, I’m kind of excited about the idea that we are now likely to have a Goonies II, or yet another sequel from the 1980’s. But there seems to be quite a bit of critical chatter about yet another 80’s sequel being “hoisted upon us” by Hollywood. But I also liked the movie Ready Player One, so I’m clearly a geek hooked on period cultural smack.

IN GOONIES II, WHO WILL THESE CHARACTERS BE, AND WILL THERE BE PIRATES?
But here’s the thing: why not make another Goonies movie? Just think about all the then-kid stars who could be reprising their roles in an utterly mutual nostalgia of fun. Josh Brolin could be back. Sean Astin could be back. Corey Feldman could be back. Martha Plimpton could be back. Now uber Cinderella story Ke Huy Quan could be back. And there’s even Jeff Cohen (Chunk) who should be back, even though he’s now an entertainment lawyer. Who could their characters be in a sequel? As it’s Hollywood, we probably don’t have to think too hard to figure some of the plot lines out. Along with the original cast, there will be new kids’ characters for the kids of original fans to identify with.

NO MATTER HOW JADED YOU ARE ABOUT SEQUELS, YOU CAN’T HELP BUT LOOK FORWARD TO GOONIES II
But despite how much I know there will be marketed contrivance in developing Goonies II that far eclipses the original, I’m still pretty stoked. Will there be pirates, a dysfunctional mob family? And what about a new Sloth character? And I can’t help but wonder if there’s going to be a random nearly unique car, like the Jeep Cherokee XJ that appeared in the original. I still want one of those. But so far, things seems to be looking good for Goonie II, as Steven Spielberg will be back in the saddle as a producer. So far there’s no director for this nostalgic middle-aged fodder.
Oh, and will Cyndi Lauper make some new music to make the circle complete?
