WORK CREW INSTALLING SEWER LINE IN OLD BELGIAN BREWERY CELLAR FINDS $10 MILLION IN GOLD BARS, COINS
This incredible story involves a Belgian brewery, the renovation of a very old cellar and laying new sewer pipe, and what at first seemed only to be a bit of an exciting find. The old brewery building is in the Flemish community of Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, which is about 40 miles by car from Brussels. A work crew tasked with completely overhauling the old building was working in the cellar, digging out and laying the pipe for a modern sewer connection and system, when the crew suddenly saw “something lying there.” At first, the work crew thought they had found a cache of dirty, 1-Euro coins. But then they also saw a gold nugget, which became a theme of discovery, totaling about $10 million of gold bars and coins.

18-year-old student worker Kobe told local media, “Our first reaction was actually disbelief. Of course, we hadn’t expected to find gold.” But to be fair, who expects to find gold digging in an old cellar? But the shock was contagious, with site manager Mario saying, “I went to look and took the gold in my hands. We kept digging up new coins and bars as well. Only then did it really sink in what we had found. That was a crazy feeling. After 33 years in construction, it is the first time I have experienced something like this.” Also to be fair, this is probably a once-in-a-lifetime find.

Unfortunately for the work crew, excitement is all they’re entitled to. They were legally obligated to hand the $10 million of gold bars and coins over to the police. Yes, the entire find. As of now the entire pile of loot is being held by CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, an organization that provides welfare support to the residents of Dendermonde. The organization has hopes that they will be able to use the entire haul to engage with their charity work. But news of buries treasure spreads fast, with literally dozens of people showing up at the old Belgian brewery trying to find their unfair share.
Apparently, there’s no more to be found, and the old building is now slated to be totally demolished. As for who really owns the gold, former Dendermonde mayor Piet Buyse thinks that it belongs to the old local brewing family, the Van Assche’s. The family has 5 years to lay claim, then it gets divided by the finders and current property owners. That means the construction crew has a chance!
