PROTEIN RAGE IS LITERALLY CAUSING A SHORTAGE, AND JACKING UP THE PRICE
I must admit, it’s getting just a little depressing to see all the things on the list that we’re running out of. Shoot, the lack of any gas in the pipeline has prices up to $8.00 a gallon in California! But that’s literally supply running out, with demand not going down at all. But lots of pretty standard things are seeing a market shortage as well. The latest of these, I must admit some surprise at, is whey. No whey, you say? Indeed! Americans have gone nuts over protein in recent years. And product makers have jumped in to supply protein crack wherever they can. It’s now literally in chips, sodas, Pop-Tarts, candy(!) and there’s even protein water. But all that whey going into pretty much everything you can eat means your protein powder price is about to jack way up.

THIS YEAR ALONE, WHOLESALE PRICES OF WHEY HAVE JUMPED AT LEAST 50%
And no, this is not a joke at all. Since January wholesale why prices have jumped 50%. As a result, inventories are tight, which really means why suppliers simply don’t have enough to keep this pace of demand supplied. That’s why the prices are jumping…. Some suppliers have already run dry. So far, no one is saying we already have a whey shortage. But it’s really the only way to explain the price going up by half and suppliers running short or even out. I mean, hey, what do you think happens when the price is higher than it’s ever been, and weekend warriors and Instagram princess muscle babes need to get their daily fix? You run short, and then out.

MOST PROTEIN POWDERS NOW COST 25% MORE, AND A SHORTAGE WILL DRIVE PRICES HIGHER
If you work out and bolster your diet with a whey filled protein shake, you may have already noticed that the price you’re paying is as much as 25% higher. Well, I’d say it’s a safe bet to expect that price to go up, and even double. So unless you’re a meat eater, which may be just as affordable as whey shortly, you just might want to fill your larder with the whey products you like, need, want or even crave. Personally, I don’t think much of Pop-Tarts filled with protein. But even those are likely to see a big price jump before the end of summer.
