THE ALTOVOLO SIGMA EVTOL AIRCRAFT BRINGS THE FUTURE OF PRIVATE TRAVEL TO TODAY
The rich geek in me maintains a list of frivolous but simply awesome things that it (he/she/they/my inner fantastical child) wants. The list does change from time to time, usually as one totally awesome thing transcends another. But the AltoVolo Sigma eVToL Aircraft is one of the coolest things to fantasize over that I can remember in about the last 10 years. So what’s in a name? Well, eVTOL actually means “e” for electric, and VTOL stands for vertical takeoff and landing. Now that is awesome! It’s literally an ultra-modern, electric, private plane that can take off and land either on the run, or straight up and down.

THE ALTOVOLO HAS A RANGE OF 510 MILES, WITH A SWEET TOP SPEED OF 290MPH
Isn’t it precious? Me wants it! The Sigma’s thrust comes from a hybrid-electric tilting jet propulsion system. And yes, it’s a jet! And the power? Instantly delivered from batteries for take offs and landings, and a liquid fuel used for range. And what kind of range does the AltoVolo Sigma have? Enough to get you from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio or Durham, North Carolina. The range is expected to be roughly 510 miles, and this sleek beast has a top speed of 290 mph, with a cruising speed of 220. So from Manhattan, you could fly to either of those 2 destinations (or the equivalent from anywhere to anywhere) in about 2 hours.

Need to commute from Manhattan to Washington, DC? You’ll get there in an hour, tops! The AltoVolo Sigma measures 15.7 feet wide and weighs just over a ton, with three passengers filling all the seats. To date, the scale prototype testing is already finished, and they’re now building a full-scale “demonstrator,” which hopefully will give us some video of this geeky wet dream soon. But that last means, of course, that we still don’t have a production date for the extremely well-heeled to make reservations on. But now for the reality check: just how much does the AltoVolo Sigma cost? Oh, just a cool $81,000,000. Maybe we could all ask Qatar for a nice little gift?
