A GEORGIA MEDICAL EXAMINER QUIT AFTER IT CAME OUT SHE SAID A STABBED, MURDERED MAN DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES
So hello Georgia, aren’t you just a peach? Well, not this time. Her name is Shannon Byers and she worked as an investigator for the Gwinnet County Medical Examiner’s office. Or at least she did until this past week. So what happened? First, she said that a stabbed corpse from a murder scene died of natural causes. Ok, that’s pretty damn weird. Second, the news that she did that got out. Then third, Shannon Byers quit. Ok. But what the hell happened here? It was a dead body from a murder scene. Someone stabbed the body (when they were still alive, of course). So how does a medical examiner say they died of natural causes?
FUNERAL HOME DISCOVERED STAB WOUND IN VICTIM’S NECK, WHERE ALL THE BLOOD CAME FROM
The “natural causes” murder victim was 61-year-old Ray Neal. Someone found him in at home in his bedroom. He was lying in a pool of his own blood, and blood all over the place. Eventually, Neal’s body arrived at a funeral home. Workers there discovered a stab wound in Neal’s neck. Oops. So then officials did an autopsy which then changed the cause of death to be a murder by stabbing. Not, shall we say, anything close to causes au natural. This is what happens when a medical examiner doesn’t even look at a murder victim’s wounds.
SO GWINNET COUNTY IS LOOKING TO HIRE A NEW MEDICAL EXAMINER, PREFERABLY NOT BLIND
So when word of this…. discrepancy of obvious reality got out, Shannon Byers quit pretty quickly. Well, if you don’t want to be fired, that’s the only way to go. But I’m not sure what kind of work she’ll get now. Any HR rep who Googles her name will discover this story. So as you can imagine, Gwinnet County is now looking for a new medical examiner. Hopefully, they’ll do an eyesight test with every applicant before they even get to the interview. I reckon whoever applies will be in a neck and neck race.
