ACETAMINOPHEN PILLS LIKE TYLENOL CAN MAKE YOU TAKE EXTRA RISKY CHOICES
So this is crazy weird. If you are one of those people who pops a lot of over the counter pain pills, pay attention. Well, or if anyone you know does and seems a little bit too adventurous and likes risky fun. A recent study from Social Cognitive and Effective Neuroscience tells us that taking acetaminophen can make you a lot more impulsive. As in, you take risks that you wouldn’t otherwise take. What is acetaminophen? You likely will know it by its brand names, Tylenol, Panadol, or the other drug name, paracetamol. See? I knew you knew it. That’s because you’ve taken it, almost no matter what.
DO YOU HAVE POOR IMPULSE CONTROL? MAYBE TONE DOWN YOUR ACETAMINOPHEN INTAKE
So do you know anyone at work who broaches the wrong issue in front of everyone at meetings? Or class? Or can’t shut up, like, all the time? They may be taking acetaminophen. And how about parkour? Or going parachuting, bungee jumping, hang gliding or the like out of nowhere? They could be dropping this bitter little pill, too. So sure, this news is a lot to swallow. But it’s scientifically sound. So far. But I know a lot of people who regularly take Tylenol and the other forms of this pain killer. Now, I have to figure out if they are the more impulsive of the people that I know.
IF YOU TOOK ACETAMINOPHEN, MAYBE RECONSIDER JUMPING OFF THAT BRIDGE
So how did the study find this? They had a group, some of whom took acetaminophen while others took a placebo. And most of the folks who took the real deal judged that risky activities like being that jackass at work, or bungee jumping from a great height, as less risky than those who took the placebo. I, for one, think that this is so far out of left field I don’t know how to catch it. The researchers found that the acetaminophen takers had “less negative emotion” when thinking about doing something risky. In other words, the idea of doing something crazy just didn’t scare them as much.
So please, folks, don’t take acetaminophen anywhere near the time you post your vote for November.
