SOME PEOPLE HAVE A SEMEN ALLERGY, AND IT CAN ACTUALLY BE REALLY DANGEROUS
Sex can be simple. But when it isn’t, it seems to be impossibly complicated. I’ve had some experience with both scenarios, in both the emotional and physical -if not both- realms. Some people have hang-ups, obviously. Others can barely track their own moods when it comes to tracking their own libidos. But with the physical side, there are injuries- even disabilities, skin issues, hair issues (yes, hair issues), even allergies. I “knew” more than one woman who was allergic to the plastics almost all condoms are made of. That was navigable, if awkward. But what if your lover is allergic to semen itself? Or you are? And yes, semen allergy is actually a real thing.

SEMEN ALLERGY REACTIONS CAN RANGE FROM FROM MILD TO ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK
And not to make a worse pun any worse for using it, having a nut allergy is hard. But being allergic to what’s in nuts is even harder. And nut allergies can be incredibly dangerous, even deadly, because of anaphylactic shock. But apparently some people have a semen allergy that can cause anaphylactic shock, too. One college student discovered their semen allergy after oral sex, which gave them severe inflammation and (fortunately temporary) facial paralysis. Most reactions involve burning, itching, redness and/or swelling of the vulva. That can include hives, shortness of breath, and even the more dangerous anaphylaxis.

WHILE STILL UNCOMMON, A SEMEN ALLERGY ISN’T AS RARE AS WE THOUGHT, AND THER’S A TEST FOR IT, TOO
Just imagine needing an EPI pen just in case you accidentally “came” into contact with sperm. Because the more sperm in the seminal contact, the worse the semen allergy reaction. For decades, it was thought that maybe only 100 women across the world had a semen allergy. Now, experts believe that it’s more like one in 40,000. If that’s true, there are over 8,000 women in America who need to be careful, and have even safer sex if their partners are men. But in even rarer cases, men can also be allergic to semen, even their own. If you think you may have this allergy, regardless of your gender, you can get a skin test to find out. And then come, better prepared.
