Scotland Clinic Begs People: No More Unsolicited Urine Samples

SCOTLAND MEDICAL CLINIC ASKS PATIENTS: PLEASE NO MORE UNSOLICITED URINE SAMPLES!

I have to say, this entire situation is totally foreign to me as an American.  At first, I assumed there must be some kind of general joke involved, with a bunch of people collectively deciding to be asshats without a cause.  I mean, in what kind of scenario would a medical clinic need to beg people to stop giving them unsolicited urine samples?  And, of course, the medical clinic is in Scotland (a part of England, you heathen), where a common jargon phrase is, “go take a piss.”  Which essentially means, get lost.  But with a little more dismissive flavor.

A VERITABLE YELLOW SHOWER OF URINE SAMPLES PROMPTED A DESPERATE SOCIAL MEDIA PLEA

So what could this possibly be all about?  I’ll get there, I promise.  The Scotland medical clinic in this odd case is the Saltoun Surgery in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.  The clinic posted on social media that its staff had been flooded (as it were) with a “high volume” of unsolicited urine samples.  And many of them were in non-medical household containers like the ones you see above.  And yes, those are bottles filled with human urine.  The social media post included, “Please be advised that we are no longer able to accept urine samples unless they have been specifically requested by the practice.  This change is necessary due to the high volume of inappropriate or unsolicited samples being submitted, which affects our ability to provide timely care to all patients.”

IT SEEMS IT’S OLDER PATIENTS SKIPPING A DOCTOR MEETING AND SUBMITTING PEE OFF THE CUFF

And if you never watched Downton Abbey, that’s highbrow language which really means, “go take a piss.”  But not here!  Yet it seems that this isn’t unique to the Scotland medical clinic, as many other clinics all over England have had to put up signs asking their patients to please not bring unsolicited urine samples, too.  Unsolicited, of course, means they didn’t ask for it.  And that’s the rub, as doctors want to actually talk to their patients before they decide if they need for them to give a urine sample.  So what’s the deal?  Mostly, it seems to be older patients who want to be tested for a urinary tract infection but simply skip the part where they talk to a doctor first to go over their symptoms.

In America, of course, this isn’t a problem.  Mostly because any local “medical clinic” here would simply charge anybody $300 or more for the hassle.  Each time.
