Its About to Get Real Gay in New Jersey

Hey, New Jersey! Put away your costume jewelry and leopard print, and break out your GAY costume jewelry and GAY leopard print. Gay marriage just got legal in your state.

On Friday New Jersey District Judge Mary Jacobson ruled that not allowing gay couples to get married violates the state constitution. The decision comes as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning the Defense of Marriage Act. The judge in the case noted that by not allowing legal gay marriage, the state is preventing same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits.

After what has been a longstanding battle over the topic between activists and opponents, same sex weddings will finally be allowed in the state beginning on Oct. 21, 2013.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, noted Bruce Springsteen fan, gastric bypass enthusiast and patron saint of all things blustery, struck down a gay marriage amendment in 2012 that had made its way through New Jersey State Legislature. In vetoing the bill, Christie said that the issue should be put before state voters to decide. State legislators, however, rejected Christie’s proposal, noting that civil rights should not be subject to a referendum. In doing so, they likely avoided the embarrassment and lengthy legal battle caused by the Proposition 8 debacle in California.

Within hours of the judge’s decision, Christie said he would appeal the ruling before the State Supreme Court.

At present, same-sex couples can marry in 13 states. An additional six offer protections like civil unions.

In reaction to the judge’s ruling, Cindy Meneghin, who along with her high school sweetheart, Maureen Kilian, sued the state more than a decade ago for the right to marry, told The New York Times, “We couldn’t be happier.”

“The U.S. Supreme Court decision striking down DOMA was historic for the nation but out of reach for us here in New Jersey,” she added. “Today, with this ruling, the full benefits of that historic Supreme Court decision are within our reach.”

Spray tans, blowouts a love for all things shiny, New Jersey stands poised to receive a military onslaught of glitter.

As a top contender for Republican presidential candidate in 2016, expect Governor Christie to aggressively fight the judge’s ruling even if the State Supreme Court does rule in favor of marriage equality.

If Christie cannot be trusted to keep the gay scourge from violating the sanctity of his home state, how can he be entrusted to keep the whole country from falling under the shadow of the dark rainbow?
