WORLD’S OLDEST LIVING PERSON, SISTER INAH CANABARRO, PASSED AWAY THIS MONTH, AGED 116
I’ve always been fascinated with extremely old people, wondering what it’s like to live to long and to have seen and experienced so much. So I’m a little surprised I missed the news of the world’s oldest person who passed away a few weeks ago, on May 1st. She was a Brazilian nun, Sister Inah Canabarro, and lived to the amazing age of 116 years old. She died of natural causes, which is a phrase I’ve never really understood. But I suppose it means it was simply her time though she was only a couple weeks shy of turning 117, two days from now on May 27th.

LONGEVIQUEST CONFIRMED THIS AGED NUN AS OLDEST PERSON IN THE WORLD
So how do we know she was the world’s oldest living person until May 1st? Well, apparently there is an organization dedicated to tracking and confirming these aged cases, LongeviQuest, which tracks supercentenarians all over the world. Supercentenarians, of course, meaning people who live a long time, over a century or 100 years. But like all incredibly aged people Sister Canabarro was interesting. How could she not be? But in her case it’s even more interesting because she was so skinny and scrawny at a young age that most people didn’t think she’d survive her childhood. Clearly, they had no idea. This history was related by her nephew, Cleber, who is a relatively youthful 84.

THE NEW OLDEST PERSON IN THE WORLD IS ENGLAND’S ETHEL CATERHAM, AGED 115
The new oldest living person in the world is now Ethel Caterham, who is only 115 years old. Hopefully, we won’t be talking about Ethel anytime soon, though I’m sure we’ll find her to be an amazing and interesting person, as well. But for now, let’s celebrate all of our elderly people out there in the world, and revel in the amazing stories of those mortals among us who push the odds incredibly far, and remind us to relish every moment we have.
