TWO LIMEY CHEFS MAKE HISTORY BOOKS WITH LARGEST SCOTCH EGG EVER MADE

I like scotch eggs.  But I have to admit, I had no idea what I was ordering far too late at night at a popular Scottish bar in Manhattan years ago.  Alas, I wasn’t there for my knowledge of the food menu.  But the dish became a staple on almost every visit thereafter, because they taste amazing.  So what is a scotch egg?  Simply put, it’s a hard-boiled egg, wrapped with sausage meat, then rolled in breadcrumbs, and fried.  Simply delicious, especially with the right spicy mustard.  And this week, two limey chefs just made the largest scotch egg, like ever.

CHEFS PHOENIX ROSS AND OLY PATTERSON USED AN OSTRICH EGG AS THE BASE OF THEIR MASTERPIECE

The two limey chefs are very popular media chefs, who teamed up to make the special, world record setting dish.  They were Phoenix Ross and Oly Paterson.  They met up in Enfield, England, with the goal of making a scotch egg larger than the Guinness World Record holder of 13 pounds, 10 ounces.  And hey, it held the record for almost two decades.  So it was time for a new, delicious champion, and the limey chefs obliged.  How?  They used an ostrich egg, of course.  And when they were finished with the meat and breadcrumbs, the finished cooked product weighed in at 17 pounds, 3.48 ounces.

HERE IS THE PERFECT BEER AND SINGLE MALT WHISKEY TO PAIR WITH ANY SCOTCH EGG ANYWHERE

But it wasn’t smooth sailing, with their first attempt simply fell apart as they pulled it out of the (large) fryer.  Yet the new champion scotch egg came out on top, and intact, with a circumference of 31.3 inches.  As for me, I’m not sure how long it would take for me to eat such a thing.  Especially as I always ate my scotch eggs at St. Andrew’s Restaurant and Bar (which tragically closed in 2017) paired with an amazing beer, Belhaven Wee Heavy, and dram of the savagely smooth Macallan’s Cask Strength.

If you have the opportunity, try all three together.  I promise I fine time and a full belly (and no hangover!).
