YOUNG TEENAGER’S SOCIAL EXPOSURE OF INTIMATE PICS
More and more people are taking pictures and videos of themselves having sex. Cell phones and their great cameras make this all too easy. For teens, this is especially true. Teens use their cell phones all the time. Teens always have their cell phones with them. When it comes to sex, this is changing everything. But teens are also huge social media users. When you mix young teenagers, cameras, sex and social media, the result is huge social personal exposure. For one 15-year-old Brazilian teen girl named Karina Saifer, that social exposure caused her to commit suicide. She couldn’t handle her intimate pics being online.

Karina’s mother Angela found her daughter’s body on the back porch of their home. Karina had lived there with her parents in Nova Andradina, which is about 500 miles west of Sao Paolo. Angela said her daughter hadn’t shown any signs of real distress. But Karina’s father Aparecido that she had talked to him about “rumors” of the intimate photos a couple months ago. So, what is a parent to do when there are no warning signs? How can they prevent the disaster of losing their kids? What can parents do to protect their young teenagers from damaging social exposure?

To make matters even more painful, photos of Karina’s dead body at the scene appeared on the WhatsApp messaging service. Police alone took pictures. So Police alone posted them. “I wouldn’t wish this on any mother,” said Angela. Aparecido said, “She came to talk to me, saying that she was feeling like a trashy person because this had happened to her. I said it didn’t have anything to do with her.” That’s an amazing thing for a father to say. But clearly more was bothering Karina than her parents knew.

Besides taking and publishing pictures of Karina’s dead body on social media, police are investigating a 17-year-old boy she used to date. The rumors are that he spread intimate pics of her online. Has he done this to other young teenagers? She was 14 years old when the photos were taken. So, somebody must answer some questions. But even the police will need to provide some answers as well.
RACIST BULLYING PLAYED A ROLE AS WELL
However, race was also a factor in Karina’s story. She was biracial and had ben bullied by classmates at her school. “After she died, we saw messages from students on her WhatsApp, hateful ones, from students teasing her about her hair because it was half-afro, because she used a hair straightener. They’d been sending them for over a year,” her father said.
SISTER DISCOVERED GRUESOME IMAGES OF KARINA’S BODY
But the family was further burdened when the police images of Karina’s body were discovered by her sister on WhatsApp. Karina was victimized by the online social exposure of intimate pics which helped lead to her suicide. But she was victimized again with online social exposure when police also posted images of her dead body. Despite being the only source of the images, Nova Andradina police deny posted the images. Young teenagers need to be protected by their schools, and by police. Karina wasn’t protected, before or after her death.
