Young Seal Enters Home Thru Pet Flap, Rousts Family Cat

YOUNG SEAL GOES HOME INVADER, GETS INTO HOME THRU PET FLAP, ROUSTS FAMILY CAT COCO

Animals are funny and often amazing.  And even if you live in dense suburbia, they can make their presence felt.  You probably already have some experience with squirrels, small birds, groundhogs, chipmunks, etc.  They make messes in the yard, run into windows, dig holes everywhere.  Maybe you’ve had your car become a nut storage before winter.  And if you have a pet of your own and a pet flap, maybe you’ve even had a close encounter already.  But I doubt you’ve had a young seal come in that way and roust your family cat!  And then walked into the living room to find it lounging on your couch?

JENN ROSS CAME HOME TO DISCOVER YOUNG SEAL ON THE FAMILY COUCH, CAT HIDING

Yet this is exactly what happened to a family in New Zealand!  The Ross family was somewhat surprised at the discovery.  But Phil Ross, of all things, is a marine biologist.  Which worked out well as that’s exactly the person you would need who’s qualified to deal with relocating an adolescent seal!  But Phil wasn’t home, of course, when his wife Jenn made the awkward discovery.  She came home from the gym and found the young seal on the family couch.  So of course this is pretty much the only kind of family emergence where you would need a marine biologist, and the one who lives there isn’t even at home!

EVEN AFTER THE YOUNG SEAL WENT BACK TO THE SEA, CAT HID AT NEIGHBOR’S FOR ANOTHER DAY

So why did the seal go in the house?  The Ross family theorizes that their cat, Coco, tried to defend the home turf from the seal.  But seals aren’t as sensible as dogs when it comes to offending cats.  And their guess is that the seal followed coco inside thru the pet flap.  But Jenn managed to coax the adolescent seal outside.  Then a ranger from the Department of Conservation came to catch the seal and take it back to the sea.  But Coco the cat remained unconvinced, and hid at a neighbor’s house overnight.  But even then, she refused to go near the couch where the young seal was for another day.

The Ross family chalks this whole ordeal up to the young seal making a poor decision like any teen.
